Guidelines
for Luminance Contrasts of Graphic Elements
Current guidelines relating to luminance contrasts of graphic elements
are primarily concerned with assuring enough luminance contrast to guarantee
legibility. In complex displays it is sometimes desirable to reduce the
luminance contrast of some elements to direct the users' attention to
more important information. We are investigating which luminance contrast
statistics should be used and their appropriate values for information
with various levels of urgency.

Accuracy of Color Rendering in Applied Settings
The colors in well-designed information graphics have been carefully chosen
to comply with numerous constraints. This work can all be wasted if the
colors on the actual users' displays in their actual work settings are
inaccurate. Our laboratory is working on understanding the impact of different
kinds of color errors in applied settings.

Guidelines for User Adjustments of Colors of Graphic Elements
Should users be allowed to adjust the colors of graphic elements in an
information presentation? If so, how freely? Our laboratory is working
on understanding what color adjustments users can be allowed to make and
what aspects of the color design must be invariant to user adjustments,
in the context of various work environments.
