The colors in well-designed
information graphics have been chosen, hopefully by trained and experienced
experts, to comply with numerous constraints. This work can all be wasted
if the colors on the actual users' displays in their actual work settings
are inaccurate. Potential sources of inaccuracy and their avoidance have
been studied extensively for many years and are at least partly understood
by display engineers and human factors experts. There has been somewhat
less work devoted to understanding what accuracy is required for different
kinds of tasks and graphics.
Our laboratory is
working on understanding the impact of different kinds of color errors
in applied settings.
