Ergonomic
Services
The OccuCom
network of certified professionals provides a comprehensive
spectrum of ergonomic services. Some of these are briefly
discussed below. Click on the desired service for more in-depth
descriptions or click to find an Ergonomics
Service Provider.
Ergonomic
Team training – Some companies want team leaders
or designated employees to serve as on-site ergonomics trainers.
This requires an ergonomics train-the-trainer program. The
OccuCom® system is tailored for this type of application.
Developing
an on-site ergo team can be a valuable approach for larger
groups or where job tasks are high risk. These people can
then provide training and elementary ergonomics interventions
for their personnel. The OccuCom system was designed from
the start with a train-the-trainer option in mind. Your OccuCom
certified ergonomic professional has the tools, the knowledge
and the experience to train your personnel to be ergo team
members. Find a Provider.
Classes
and Lectures – Group instruction can provide an
effective means to encourage interactive learning either as
a first exposure or as a periodic refresher. Classes provided
by OccuCom certified ergonomics professionals include Office
Ergonomics, Ergonomic Considerations for Managers, Physical
Labor Ergonomics and Ergonomics for Bus Operators.
The educational opportunity available through group lectures
and workshops is a cornerstone for many health and safety
programs. OccuCom certified ergonomic professionals have a
number of lecture programs ready for presentation. These classes
are generally designed to be 30, 60 or 120 minutes in length
and include interactive PowerPoint presentations, group activities
and exercises, pre- and post-lecture knowledge assessments,
and obstacle courses when applicable and feasible. Find
a Provider.
The classes provided by OccuCom certified professionals include
but are not limited to the following:
- Ergonomic
Considerations for Managers (30 minutes)
- Office Ergonomics (60 min)
- Back School (60 or 120 minutes)
- Ergonomics for Bus Operators (120 minutes)
OccuCom®
Musculoskeletal Disorder Prevention System – The Occupational
Health and Safety Communication Surveillance and Training System
(OccuCom® system) is a comprehensive ergonomic injury and
illness prevention program. Implementation of this system can
help your employees and your business through improved employee
comfort, reduced injuries, optimized productivity, regulatory
compliance and reduced workers’ compensation premium impact.

•
Phase I – Surveillance: This phase is characterized
by passive collection of relevant organizational data (injury
trend analysis, health surveys, human resource information,
etc.) and active collection through methods such as observation
of task activities and interviews utilizing video, digital
photography and other measurement tools.
•
Phase II – Analysis of Data: In this phase, the data
collected during surveillance is compiled into reports complete
with risk prioritization, time lines and control measures.
• Phase III – Implementation of Controls (Fixes):
During this phase the solutions recommended in Phase 2 are
put in place (training interventions, workspace/tool design/redesign).
•
Phase IV – Evaluation/Reevaluation: Outcome tracking
and program adjustment is carried out during this final phase.
Worksite
Epidemiologic Surveillance and Needs Assessment –
This service provides your organization with a complete assessment
of your workplace environment, as well as specific subgroup
worker populations. This comprehensive overview helps identify
and prioritize areas requiring change to improve workplace
safety or compliance with state and federal regulations.
This service is essentially a subset of the services provided
in the OccuCom® Musculoskeletal Disorder Prevention System
described above. In this case, only phases I and II (Surveillance
and Analysis) are performed.
•

Consultation/Design
– Many aspects of workspace design and equipment selection
can impact worker safety and productivity. OccuCom certified
professionals have the knowledge and expertise to help you
make the right choices the first time around.
Space planning, workstation layout and selection of lighting,
furniture, seating and ergonomic products/accessories can
all be challenging activities.
- What
makes for good space planning?
- How
should the workstation be organized for efficient work.
- What
lighting reduces eye strain and has a lower cost of ownership?
- What
are the best furniture and seating choices for your employees?
- What
are the software compatibilities and warranty issues of ergonomic
product and accessory solutions?
Making
the wrong decisions the first time around may result in costly
reorganization of the workspace or replacing of equipment.
Making the right decision from the start can reduce long-term
costs.
Ergonomic
Job Analysis – This service provides your company
with a comprehensive assessment of how the worker or sub group
of workers interacts with specific jobs/tasks in terms of
work postures, movement strategies, tools and the general
work environment.
Some jobs or tasks present with high degrees of risk. Targeting
these areas can provide a timely, focused approach to addressing
the most problematic of ergonomic issues in a company. This
approach utilizes a four phase process to record, identify,
address and validate solutions for ergonomic problems in the
workplace. These four phases are identical to those used in
the OccuCom® Musculoskeletal Disorder Prevention System
previously described. The difference in this case is that
the approach is applied to one or more specific jobs or job
tasks rather than to the organization as a whole;
•
Phase 1 – Surveillance: This phase is characterized
by passive collection of relevant organizational data (injury

One-on-One
Ergonomic Consultation and Evaluation – This service
is targeted for high-risk or injured workers and is conducted
onsite for the individual in his or her working environment.
This is an important component of any thorough ergonomics
program.
Individuals
who work in high-risk jobs, who have active workers’
compensation claims, or who have prior history of cumulative
trauma disorders are candidates for comprehensive ergonomic
evaluations. This type of assessment provides in-depth analysis
of ergonomic factors affecting the individual. When indicated,
nationally-recognized risk analysis tools are utilized, and
their results are included in any pertinent reports.
Before a worker is injured, it is often possible to avoid
cumulative trauma disorders through training and recommendations
that would help anybody involved in that job task. However,
once an individual is injured, the situation demands more
exacting solutions. These interventions may not be any more
costly than for an uninjured worker, but the provision of
controls and training needs to consider more precisely the
characteristics, attributes and work practice of the injured
worker.
