- According to OSHA, “The fact is that... work-related
musculoskeletal disorders….are the most prevalent, most
expensive, and most preventable workplace injuries in the
country.”
ü - According
to the Division of Injury Control of the Center for Disease
Control and Prevention (CDCP) in Atlanta, “Injuries
are very predictable and are subject to the same principles
as infectious disease and, therefore, quite preventable.”
ü - A research
study conducted by the National Safety Council in 1997, revealed
that 88% of workplace musculoskeletal injuries were due to
unsafe behaviors (e.g., poor or awkward work postures, repetitive
motions, improper movement strategies while lifting etc.),
10% were due to unsafe environmental conditions (e.g., poor
workstation and tool design, slippery floors, poor housekeeping,
etc.), and 2% were unknown.
ü - The regulatory
environmental landscape and our experience in workplace health
and safety, especially the field of human factors/ergonomics,
have changed dramatically over the last two decades (e.g.,
Cal-OSHA General Safety Order 5110, Article 109 Ergonomics,
Fed-OSHA General Safety Order, Bipartisan Ergonomics Bill
SB 2184 introduced on April 17, etc.). At the same time, ergonomics-based
work injury prevention programs have proven their ability
to strengthen a clinic’s or a consultant’s business
base, while enhancing an organization’s bottom line
with increased productivity, efficiency, and quality of satisfaction
for worker’s across all SIC codes.
